This article applies if Squarespace is your store platform in ReferralCandy — you'll see the Squarespace connection if you chose Squarespace when you signed up. If you set ReferralCandy up earlier using a tracking code, see the last section.
Connecting your Squarespace store to ReferralCandy installs the ReferralCandy app on your Squarespace website. Once connected, ReferralCandy receives your store's orders, detects which of them came from a referral, and creates the friend offer coupon codes referred friends use at checkout. You don't need to add ReferralCandy as a contributor or paste a tracking code into your site.
Before you start
Before you connect your Squarespace store, check two things:
You can sign in to the Squarespace account that manages the website you want to connect.
Your ReferralCandy currency matches your Squarespace store currency. In ReferralCandy, go to Account → Store details and check Currency under Store settings. Fixed-amount friend offers need the two to match.
ReferralCandy imports paid orders from your live store. Orders placed through Squarespace's test checkout are marked as test orders and aren't imported, so use a real order when you want to check the connection end to end.
Connect your Squarespace store
To connect your Squarespace store, open Integrations → Squarespace in ReferralCandy and approve ReferralCandy's access on Squarespace. If you've just signed up, ReferralCandy takes you to this step automatically once you've chosen a plan.
In ReferralCandy, go to Integrations → Squarespace.
Click Connect with Squarespace.
Sign in to Squarespace if you're prompted, then choose the website you want to connect.
Review the access ReferralCandy asks for, then click Allow. Squarespace lists four permissions: view order and fulfillment information; view customer information (name, email, address, and more); view discount codes and promotion information; and create, update, and delete discounts.
Squarespace returns you to ReferralCandy. The status shows Connected.
Squarespace approves these four permissions together rather than individually. The discounts access is the one that lets ReferralCandy create your friend offer coupon codes.
If you close or cancel the Squarespace approval screen, nothing changes on your store. Go back to Integrations → Squarespace whenever you're ready to try again.
What happens after you connect
After you connect, Squarespace sends each new paid order to ReferralCandy automatically, and ReferralCandy also checks for orders periodically so nothing is missed if there's a temporary delay. Orders appear on your Purchases & referrals page.
ReferralCandy creates or updates a contact for each buyer using their email address and the name on their Squarespace billing address. If the billing address doesn't include a name, ReferralCandy uses the name on the shipping address instead. Squarespace doesn't pass marketing consent with its orders, so ReferralCandy treats customers imported this way as not having opted in to marketing.
Friend offer coupons on Squarespace
Your friend offer is the discount a referred friend gets. On Squarespace, ReferralCandy creates unique coupon codes for two friend offer types:
Percentage discounts
Fixed-amount discounts
Free shipping, store credit, Buy X Get Y, and automatic checkout discounts aren't available as Squarespace friend offers.
Each advocate gets their own friend offer code, created by ReferralCandy in your Squarespace store, and every friend that advocate refers uses that same code. Codes start with FRIEND- followed by a unique string, so you can find them under Products & Services → Discounts in Squarespace.
You can also put an expiry on the friend offer coupon: no expiry, a set number of days from when it's issued, or a specific date.
Friends enter their coupon code themselves at checkout. Squarespace doesn't apply it for them.
How ReferralCandy detects referrals
On Squarespace, ReferralCandy detects a referral through the friend offer coupon shown on an advocate's referral link. Here's the full path:
An advocate shares their referral link.
A friend opens that link and sees the advocate's friend offer code.
The friend enters that code at Squarespace checkout.
Once Squarespace reports the order as paid, ReferralCandy matches the code back to the advocate who shared the link and credits them with the referral.
Where you can, it's worth nudging advocates to share their referral link rather than passing the code around on its own. Link clicks show up in your campaign's share and visit numbers, so you get a clearer view of which advocates are actually driving traffic — a code used on its own arrives at checkout with none of that history behind it.
A detected referred purchase still has to meet your campaign's reward conditions and pass ReferralCandy's fraud checks before a reward is issued. It can stay pending through your review period, so a paid order may appear on Purchases & referrals before it's qualified.
Disconnect your Squarespace store
To disconnect your Squarespace store, go to Integrations → Squarespace, click Disconnect Squarespace, then review the warning and confirm.
Important: disconnecting stops order syncing and coupon creation. Referrals from new orders aren't detected until you connect again.
To remove ReferralCandy's access from the Squarespace side as well, go to Settings → Extensions → Connected Extensions in Squarespace and remove ReferralCandy.
If you set up ReferralCandy with a tracking code
If you set ReferralCandy up on Squarespace previously by pasting a tracking code into your site's Code Injection panel, check where that code currently sits — Squarespace changed which page carries most checkouts.
Important: Squarespace now serves physical, download, and service checkouts on the Order status page, while gift card, membership, and subscription checkouts still use the Order confirmation page. If your ReferralCandy tracking code is only in the Order confirmation page field, open Website → Website Tools → Code Injection and copy it into the Order status page field as well, between the {.if firstPageView} and {.end} tags, then confirm the migration in the banner Squarespace shows there. Keeping the code in both fields covers every product type.
Squarespace's Using code injection guide shows where the panel lives if your navigation looks different. To check the code is firing, see Adding the referral tracking code, and for the order emails behind this setup see Sending invoice emails.
Squarespace integration FAQ
What does "Reconnection required" mean?
What does "Reconnection required" mean?
Reconnection required means ReferralCandy's authorization for your Squarespace store can no longer be renewed. Go to Integrations → Squarespace, click Connect with Squarespace, and approve access again.
ReferralCandy couldn't complete the connection — what should I do?
ReferralCandy couldn't complete the connection — what should I do?
If the connection didn't complete, go back to Integrations → Squarespace and start it again. Make sure you're signed in to a Squarespace account that can manage the website you're connecting, and approve the access ReferralCandy asks for on the Squarespace screen. If Squarespace tells you there are no websites attached to your account, you've signed in with a Squarespace account that doesn't own a site — sign out of Squarespace, then start the connection again using the account that manages your store.
Why are my coupon rewards unavailable?
Why are my coupon rewards unavailable?
Coupon rewards are unavailable when your Squarespace connection doesn't have permission to manage discounts. ReferralCandy shows the message "This connection can't create discounts, so coupon rewards are unavailable. Disconnect and connect with Squarespace again to grant Discounts access." Do exactly that — disconnect, connect again, and approve the discounts permissions alongside orders. Order syncing keeps working without them; only coupon creation is blocked.
Why doesn't my test order appear in ReferralCandy?
Why doesn't my test order appear in ReferralCandy?
Squarespace marks orders placed through test checkout as test orders, and ReferralCandy doesn't import them. To check that your connection is working, place a real paid order and look for it on your Purchases & referrals page.
Why does my fixed-amount friend offer show a currency warning?
Why does my fixed-amount friend offer show a currency warning?
A currency warning on a fixed-amount friend offer means your ReferralCandy currency and your Squarespace store currency don't match. Go to Account → Store details, set Currency under Store settings to match your Squarespace store, save, then save your reward again.
A paid order isn't showing as a referral. What should I check?
A paid order isn't showing as a referral. What should I check?
If a paid order isn't showing as a referral, check that the friend opened the advocate's referral link and entered their friend offer code at checkout, and that the purchase meets your campaign's reward conditions. On Squarespace the coupon code entered at checkout is what connects an order to an advocate, so an order placed without it may not be detected as referred. If the order still looks wrong, let us know the order number and we can check it against your campaign.
What happens if I refund a referred order?
What happens if I refund a referred order?
If you fully refund or cancel a referred Squarespace order, ReferralCandy picks that up automatically and sets the purchase amount to zero, so it falls below the minimum purchase in your reward conditions and no reward is issued. This works the same way it does on Shopify. Refunds are only reflected while the purchase is still within your review period — once the review period ends and a reward has been issued, it can't be recalled.
