[BigCommerce] Integration guide

Connect your BigCommerce store, check referral tracking, and test that purchases reach ReferralCandy and link to the right advocate.

Written by Adam

Connect ReferralCandy to your BigCommerce store through the ReferralCandy app, then check the referral tracking code. The app sends orders to ReferralCandy automatically. The tracking code connects a purchase to the advocate whose referral link the shopper opened.

Already installed ReferralCandy? Start with Check your connection and tracking status below.

Install ReferralCandy on BigCommerce

You'll need access to install apps in your BigCommerce store. If you need to add the tracking code manually, BigCommerce also requires the Manage Web Analytics permission.

  1. Open ReferralCandy in the BigCommerce App Marketplace and start the installation.

  2. Sign in to the BigCommerce store you want to connect. Install the app and confirm the requested permissions.

  3. Follow the prompts to finish setting up your ReferralCandy account.

  4. In ReferralCandy, go to Account → Store details and check that the Currency under Store settings matches your store's currency. This matters if you offer fixed-amount discounts.

Check your connection and tracking status

In your ReferralCandy dashboard, go to Integrations → BigCommerce. The page shows two separate checks:

  • Store connected means ReferralCandy can read orders from your store. Check that the store URL shown is the one you intended to connect.

  • Tracking detected means the referral tracking code has reported a purchase.

Under Referral tracking code, follow the instructions for your status:

  • Tracking detected: continue to Test purchases and referrals. You don't need to paste another copy of the code.

  • The page says the code was added automatically, but tracking isn't detected yet: use the friend's purchase in Test purchases and referrals to check it. If tracking still isn't detected after that order, follow the manual steps below. Some themes don't run automatically added scripts.

  • The page asks you to add the snippet: follow the manual steps below, then use the friend's purchase in Test purchases and referrals to check it.

Store connected doesn't confirm referral tracking. Orders can reach ReferralCandy while the tracking code isn't working. Without that code, referral-link clicks alone won't connect purchases to advocates; purchases can still be detected as referred when shoppers use a ReferralCandy friend offer code.

Add the referral tracking code manually

  1. In ReferralCandy, open Integrations → BigCommerce and click Copy snippet under Referral tracking code.

  2. In your BigCommerce dashboard, go to Settings → Data solutions → Affiliate Conversion Tracking.

  3. Click Connect to open the setup, or open the existing configuration if it is already connected.

  4. Paste the snippet into Conversion Tracking Code. Keep any code from other services. If this field already contains a ReferralCandy snippet, replace that copy with the code you just copied.

  5. Click Connect to save the setup, or save your changes if you are editing an existing configuration.

BigCommerce adds this code to your order confirmation page. Use Affiliate Conversion Tracking for this snippet: its order variables aren't supported in Script Manager or theme files. See BigCommerce's conversion tracking instructions.

Test purchases and referrals

  1. Follow Testing the referral process to prepare a complete referral test, including separate advocate and new referred friend details.

  2. As part of that test, complete the friend's purchase through the advocate's referral link and let the BigCommerce order confirmation page load.

  3. Return to Integrations → BigCommerce in ReferralCandy and check for Tracking detected.

  4. Open Purchases & Referrals and check that the purchase appears and is linked to the intended advocate. Detection isn't instant, so it may not appear immediately.

A purchase appearing in ReferralCandy confirms that the order arrived. The referral test also checks whether it is linked to the intended advocate. If an order appears but isn't detected as a referral, use Troubleshooting referral detection.

If your store is disconnected

If Integrations → BigCommerce shows Store disconnected, ReferralCandy can't read new orders from your store. Check whether ReferralCandy is still installed in BigCommerce:

  • The app was removed: install ReferralCandy again from your BigCommerce dashboard and complete the connection prompts.

  • The app is still installed, or reconnecting doesn't resolve it: let us know, and include your store URL and the connection message you see.
