With ReferralCandy's integration with Klaviyo, segments work in both directions: ReferralCandy segments can be referenced from Klaviyo profiles, and Klaviyo segments can be built from ReferralCandy events and custom properties to send targeted emails or SMS based on referral activity.
Using ReferralCandy segments in Klaviyo
When a customer is enrolled in a ReferralCandy segment targeted by a campaign, that enrollment is reflected on the contact's Klaviyo profile via the RC - Enrolled event and the campaign-specific RC [Short code] - … custom properties.
To inspect what's on a specific contact's profile in Klaviyo, go to Audience → Profiles and open the contact's profile. You'll see the RC custom properties listed there, plus a record of RC events on the activity timeline.
For a full list of available events and properties, see Klaviyo: ReferralCandy events and custom properties.
Building Klaviyo segments based on referral activity
You can build Klaviyo segments using ReferralCandy events and custom properties to power targeted email or SMS sends. Common patterns:
"Enrolled in a specific campaign" — Klaviyo segment definition based on the RC - Enrolled event filtered by Campaign name.
"Has earned at least N referral rewards" — Klaviyo segment based on the count of RC - Reward earned events, or on the RC [Short code] - Referred purchase accumulated custom property.
"Close to next reward tier" — Klaviyo segment based on the RC [Short code] - Referred purchase needed for next reward custom property (e.g., advocates 1-2 purchases away from the next tier).
"Has unsubscribed from referral emails" — Klaviyo segment based on the RC - Unsubscribed from campaign emails event.
When building these segments in Klaviyo, always insert the RC custom property via Klaviyo's Personalization picker (don't type the property name with a placeholder short code), so the correct campaign-specific property is wired in.
For Klaviyo's general segment-building docs, see Getting started with segments on the Klaviyo help center.
Troubleshooting
If RC custom properties don't appear on a Klaviyo profile, or render blank in your emails, see Why is my Klaviyo email sending a blank referral link (or any blank ReferralCandy custom property)? for the diagnostic flow.
