What this article covers (and what it doesn’t)
This article covers the ReferralCandy campaign Theme editor inside the Shopify embedded app—where you customize:
Branding shared across your campaign emails + ReferralCandy pages (logo, banner, colors, fonts, etc.)
Text/content for the items in the Theme editor dropdown (emails + pages/widgets listed there)
This article does not cover Shopify checkout blocks/extensions and campaign Widgets settings, which are edited elsewhere:
Referral extension (Shopify checkout “Thank you” page block) → edited in Shopify Checkout Editor + your campaign’s Widgets settings
Customer referral details extension (Customer Account block) → edited in Shopify Theme/Customer Account Editor + your campaign’s Widgets settings
Join block (storefront embedded signup block) → edited in your campaign’s Widgets settings (not in your Shopify theme editor)
If you’re trying to edit text/images for those blocks/extensions, use the specific articles for each one.
Quick map: where to edit what
Use this as the “first question” checklist when someone asks “where do I change ____?”
Emails + ReferralCandy pages listed in the Theme editor dropdown
Edit in: ReferralCandy → Campaigns → (Select campaign) → Themes → Customize
Logo / banner / colors / font used across the Theme
Edit in: Theme editor → Branding tab
Text on Join Page / Share Page / post-purchase popup (ReferralCandy pages)
Edit in: Theme editor → Content tab
Text or banner on Shopify checkout “Thank you” page ReferralCandy block (Referral extension)
Edit in: Shopify Checkout Editor + campaign Widgets (not in Themes)
Shopify blocks/extensions settings (show/hide icons, alignment, etc.)
Edit in: Shopify editor block settings (and sometimes campaign Widgets)
Open the Theme editor
In your Shopify admin, go to ReferralCandy.
Go to Campaigns.
Select your campaign.
In Customize campaign, click Themes.
Find your active theme, then click Customize.
Set the branding (shared across your Theme)
In the Theme editor, click the Branding tab. From there you can update:
Logo
Upload JPG/PNG (max 10MB)
Banner
Upload JPG/PNG (max 10MB)
Note: This banner applies to ReferralCandy pages (e.g., Join Page / Share Page / post-purchase popup).
It is not the banner shown in Shopify checkout blocks/extensions.
Remove banner from
Hide the banner on specific ReferralCandy pages (Join Page / Share Page / post-purchase popup)
Favicon

Primary sharing method
Sets which sharing option is featured by default across your referral experience (for example on Share Page and some emails)
This does not remove other sharing options, and it does not change the default share copy for each channel (that’s edited elsewhere in the theme content settings)
When you’re done, click Save.
Note: Primary sharing method may only appear for some Shopify accounts (based on when the account/theme was created, if you cannot see it, you may need to create a new theme).
Edit the content (what the dropdown controls)
In the Theme editor, click the Content tab.
At the top, you’ll see a dropdown containing the emails/pages/widgets that this Theme can edit. The key rule:
If it’s in the Theme editor dropdown, it’s edited here.
If it’s not in the dropdown, it’s edited somewhere else (Shopify editor and/or campaign Widgets).
From here you can also:
Preview desktop vs mobile
Switch language and add translations (if you use multiple languages)
Note: Tiered rewards (FlexiTiers) display in campaign emails/pages only on supported default themes (for example Simple/Affiliates). If your tier table isn’t showing, try creating a new theme and activating it for your campaign, or ask to speak to our human support agents to help apply tiered rewards to your current setup.
Important: Shopify checkout blocks/extensions are not edited here
The Theme editor is for campaign emails + ReferralCandy pages.
Shopify checkout blocks/extensions (like the ReferralCandy block on the checkout “Thank you” page) are edited in:
Shopify’s editor (Checkout / Customer Accounts), and/or
Your campaign’s Widgets settings
If someone’s asking “Where do I edit the text/image on the Shopify checkout Thank you page?”, send them to [Shopify] Referral extension (not Themes).
Legacy note: older “Referral Widget” and “Post-purchase Widget” entries
In some themes, you may still see older widget entries (for example Referral Widget or Post-purchase Widget) in the Theme editor dropdown.
These refer to legacy, script-based widgets from the period when Shopify allowed checkout scripts.
Newer Shopify setups use checkout extensions / app blocks instead (like the Referral extension).
If a merchant is trying to use the legacy scripts and can’t find them, they may need to contact support (and in most cases, the recommended path is to use the newer extension-based setup).
If you're still using the older legacy checkout that support scripts, our human support agents would be more than happy to provide you with those scripts.
FAQ
How do I edit without affecting live customers?
Best practice: duplicate your theme first, edit the duplicate, then switch the active theme when ready.
Go to Themes
Click the … menu on a theme → Duplicate
Customize the duplicate
Back on Themes, click Select to activate it
Why are emails/pages different for affiliates?
Affiliate campaigns use an Affiliates Theme, which contains affiliate-specific pages (like the signup details page).
I need to directly edit HTML/CSS in the Shopify embedded app—can I?
A developer “edit HTML/CSS” mode isn’t available in the Shopify embedded app theme editor. If someone needs deeper customization, they should contact support to discuss options/workarounds.
Why are the tiered rewards I offer not showing up in my campaign emails and pages?
If you’re using Tiered rewards (FlexiTiers), advocates and affiliates can see the reward tiers in your campaign emails and pages to encourage them to reach those milestones.
This is only available in the default Simple and Affiliates themes.
If you previously enabled developer mode for your campaign’s themes and used custom code, the reward tiers may not appear in your emails and pages.
To fix this, you can:
Create a new theme and activate it for your campaign, or
Ask to get in touch with one of our human support agents and they can help implement the reward tiers into your existing theme
