Boost add-on: Customizing the referral code (Shopify & BigCommerce)

ReferralCandy Boost is a paid add-on. Visit the signup page in the web app or Shopify app to subscribe.

If you choose Coupon as your friend offer, the Boost add-on allows you to change the default referral code with a custom code for your advocates and affiliates. This feature is available only on platforms where ReferralCandy auto-generates coupon codes, such as Shopify and BigCommerce.


Edit the contact's referral code

To customize the customer referral code:

  1. From the ReferralCandy dashboard, go to Campaigns > Select your campaign > Advocates or Affiliates.

  2. Find the contact you want to edit in the Approved tab, or use the search bar.

  3. On the contact details page, find Referral Code in the INDIVIDUAL CAMPAIGN DETAILS section. Click Edit.

  4. In the Referral Code field, enter the contact's custom referral discount code.

  5. Click Save.

  1. From Shopify admin, go to the Referral Candy app > Contacts.

  2. Find the contact you want to edit or use the search bar.

  3. Click the contact's Shopify ID. A new tab opens.

  4. In the upper right corner, click More actions and select Edit discount code.

  5. Select the campaign.

  6. In the Custom coupon code field, enter the contact's custom referral discount code.

  7. Click Save.

Note: When your campaign is paused or stopped, or the contact is unenrolled, the referral code becomes invalid. The code remains assigned to the individual and becomes valid again when the campaign is set back to live or the contact is re-enrolled.

Can my advocates and customers edit their friend offer discount code themselves?

No. Advocates in a refer-a-friend campaign and affiliates in an affiliate campaign don't have the option to customize their own discount code. Only merchants subscribed to the Boost add-on can edit the discount code.

Why am I getting the "Custom code already exists" error?

The Custom code already exists error appears when you're already using the referral code for another contact in your account.

If you already used the referral code before or it already exists in your eCommerce platform, you may not reuse the exact code for the same user or any other user in your campaign.

What happens if someone uses a contact's old referral code?

When you update a contact's referral or discount code, the old code is disabled and the advocate or affiliate must use and promote the new code. However, both the old and new codes remain attributed to the contact, and can't be reassigned to another contact or campaign.

Referred purchases made before the update that are still within the review period remain assigned to the contact and are not affected by the change.

Why can't I change my contact's referral discount code?

The ability to edit the referral or discount code is only available for:

  • Merchants using Shopify and BigCommerce where coupon codes are auto-generated

  • Accounts with the Boost add-on enabled

  • Refer-a-friend and affiliate campaigns with Coupon set as the friend offer reward type

  • Contacts enrolled in a campaign

If you're getting an error when editing your contact's referral code, it's possible that it's already in use. Try again with a different code.
